What is Leaking from my Car?
You wouldn't let your roof leak, so why let the car leak? A vehicle is one of the largest investments a person will make in their life and in order to get the many miles desired out of the vehicle proper repair and maintenance must be performed. Some vehicle leaks are harder to detect than others, depending on how fast they drip and the type of fluid. But this quick guide to auto fluid leaks will help a vehicle owner detect and identify a leak so they can make an appointment with a local auto repair shop to have the problem fixed accordingly.
Oil is rather easy to identify and is one of, if not the most, common fluid to leak from a vehicle. Ranging from black to light brown, oil leaks may not need immediate repair depending on their source and how fast it is leaking. Contact a mechanic to have the issue assessed.
The fluid poured into radiators is usually a bright green color, but can also appear in pink and yellow. This fluid is circulated through the engine to help regular engine temperature. A coolant leak may cause a vehicle to overheat, resulting in major engine damage.
Transmission fluid will appear red and will often accumulate under the passenger cabin of a vehicle, where the transmission is generally located. Transmission fluid is crucial for proper shifting.
This fluid looks very similar to transmission fluid but it will drip from the rear of the vehicle instead of the front. If a reddish puddle near the rear of the vehicle is found it is likely coming from the differential.
Brake Fluid is generally clear or light brown. If a leak does happen, which is fairly rare, it will usually drip from the brake master cylinder under the hood or from a wheel cylinder, near a wheel. Brake fluid leaks can greatly compromise braking power and they should be addressed immediately by brake repair experts.
When fluids first begin to leak from a vehicle it often will be an easy fix. A gasket or seal may need to be replaced, but if the leak isn't addressed it can cause major internal damage to the engine, transmission or other systems. Taking care of leaks as soon as they are found is the best way to avoid costly auto repair. If a leak is found bring it to a local mechanic right away.
