What Happens to My Car During a Tune Up?
A tune up use to mean just that, tuning the carburetor, changing the plugs and a few other mechanical services. As cars have become more and more computerized the term tune up has evolved into a loose term, because the services completed during what is generally referred to as the tune up really varies from vehicle to vehicle. While there is no set list of regular tasks for this term, these are a few of the common services completed during tune ups of modern cars, trucks and SUVs.
One of the most common service performed during tune ups is the replacement of air filters, fuel filters and cabin filters. The new filters will help ensure your vehicle gets the proper fuel/air mixture and the air entering the vehicle is free of any engine fumes.
Belt & Hose Inspection
An automotive technician will inspect out all belts and hoses during this service. If any of these parts, generally hoses of the cooling system or the timing belt are damaged they will be replaced.
Fuel Injector Cleaning
After many miles on the road fuel injectors collect dirt and grime which can reduce the flow of fuel to the engine, causing idling problems and other driveability issues. A fuel injector cleaning will remove these contaminants and restore engine power.
Spark Plugs & Wires
One part of the tune up that has stood the test of time is the replacement of spark plugs and wires. The spark plugs create the tiny explosion that ignites the air/fuel mixtures to power the engine. Poorly gapped, dirty or corroded spark plugs will misfire, causing driveability problems and a reduction in fuel efficiency.
Many vehicle issues don't initially have any noticeable symptoms, but that doesn't mean your car isn't aware something is amiss. During a routine tune up the mechanic will hook your car up to a computer to identify any fault codes that are being sent by sensors in the vehicle so the problem can be repaired before it ever actually exists!
