5 Common Reasons Your Check Engine Light is On
When that pesky check engine light turns on it seems all too easy to simply ignore it. But this isn't going to be one of those problems where the car happens to fix itself (it doesn't ever do that). While many people fear the news that they're going receive when they head to the shop for check engine light diagnostics you really ought not be afraid. Chances are that it is a small issue resulting in a loss of fuel economy or power. So really, you should be thankful that light turned on! Here are 5 common reasons you may experience an illuminated check engine light.
Loose or broken gas capThe best thing you can hope for if the check engine light has come on is to find out that your gas cap is loose or cracked, as this is an extremely simple fix. The light will come on if this problem occurs because it will allow fuel vapors to evaporate up through the filler hose, thus preventing you from using gas that you spent your hard earned money on!
Malfunctioning MAF sensorThe mass airflow sensor measures air coming in through the air intake and calculates how much of it needs to be mixed with the fuel to ensure a proper air/fuel mixture to make your car run right. If the sensor is unable to properly do its job it will likely result in your vehicle running rich, which means it is using too much gasoline. This may happen simply be because of the fact that the air filter is clogged and restricting air flow to the engine.
Exhaust leakIf an exhaust leak occurs, depending on its location, it can through off the readings of the oxygen sensor. This sensor also helps dictate the air and fuel mixture utilized by your engine. An exhaust leak will cause the sensor to detect more oxygen in the exhaust than there actually is. This will cause the sensor to send a signal to the fuel injection unit to use more gas than necessary.
MisfiringA vehicle that is misfiring will run rough or even stall while idling. This is generally caused by corroded or mis-gapped spark plugs. In order to restore the driveability of the vehicle the spark plugs will need to be replaced.
Failed catalytic converterOne of the worst problems that can come of a check engine light is finding out you need a new catalytic converter, as this part, which converts harmful exhaust fumes into less hazardous emissions, is very expensive to replace. It is important to note that this part won't fail unless something else else goes wrong first, usually a smaller problem that would have triggered the light beforehand. This is why it is important to get check engine light diagnostics completed as soon as the light comes on.
