4 Common Problems that can Cause a Dead Battery

Your vehicle's battery provides the power necessary for your car to perform many functions. From operating accessories like the radio or power seats, to ensuring the fuel pump is activated and that your headlights shine bright, the battery plays a very important role in vehicle operation. If your battery dies it also means that you won't be able to start your vehicle. If you have a dead battery it is likely caused by one of the following issues so if the problem is persistent be sure to have your local auto repair mechanic check out the problem. Batteries do need to be replaced every so often due to normal wear down, and that may also be the issue.

Stuck Relay

Relays open and close circuits to control the distribution of electricity. If a relay becomes stuck in the on position it can cause the part of accessory to continuously run, even when the car is off. This means that part will drain the battery's power as it runs when the vehicle is off.

Corrosion or Dirt

Intermittent battery trouble is more than likely being caused by corrosion around the battery terminals. Unhook your battery and inspect it for corrosion or dirt and if you notice any simply clean it off with a wire brush.

Interior Light Problems

A common problem on more recent vehicle is if their system for detecting a person exiting a vehicle fails. Many newer cars have a feature that turns on the interior light when the car is shut off and it also keeps electricity flowing to power windows and seats until a door is opened. If the system malfunctions and doesn't detect the opening and closing of the drivers door it means that power will be supplied to the interior light and windows until the vehicle is restarted. If this is overnight or an extended period of time it will kill the battery.

Driver Error

The most common cause of battery trouble isn't related to a car problem at all. It generally has to do with a person leaving a door or trunk open, allowing interior lights to remain on and drain the battery. Another common one is leaving headlights or driving lights on. Always be sure lights are off and doors are snugly closed.

If you constantly encounter a dead battery don't delay having the problem diagnosed. Not only is it annoying but it may be an indication of a larger problem.
