Easy Ways to Lower Your Fuel Expenses

With gas prices expected to stay high throughout 2021, your pocketbook will be feeling pain at the pump for many more months to come. Fortunately, there are some simple measures you can take to boost fuel-efficiency and keep more money in your wallet. At Brake Masters, our local mechanics can conduct maintenance tasks that will help your car achieve the best gas mileage possible.

Simple Tips for Boosting MPGs

While driving to work and back each day, there are some easy ways to help your vehicle attain the best gas mileage. For one, it's important that you keep your tires properly inflated. Typically, tires need to be at a point between 30 and 35 psi, and it's worth checking to see the exact requirement for your tires. If your tires are underinflated, then your engine will have to expend more power to get your wheels to roll down the road, which can consequently cause a dip in MPGs. Also, it's important that you're driving with correct tire inflation so that you don't increase the risk of a blowout. Another way to prevent fuel waste is to make sure that your gas cap is always tightly fastened. If your gas cap is loose or missing, then fuel may evaporate before your engine gets the chance to run on it.

There are also certain maintenance tasks that we can quickly complete at the shop to improve fuel-efficiency. Replacing your fuel filter every 25,000 miles will help to prevent pollutants from hurting performance and fuel-economy. Air filters should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, which will allow the right quantity of air to reach the combustion chamber. This will then prevent your engine from burning up additional fuel as a way to compensate for a lack of air. At our shop, we can also complete other maintenance tasks that will help to maximize gas mileage, such as oil changes and spark plug replacement.
