Why Won't My Car Start? 4 Common Reasons

Why Won't My Car Start? 4 Common ReasonsWhen it comes to cars, there's nothing quite as frustrating as getting in a car that worked fine yesterday and having it not start today. Automobiles are complicated machines with many intricate parts that work together to get the engine running and to stay running, as well as get that power to turn the wheels. However, if a vehicle won't start there are a few issues that are often the culprit. While these aren't the only problems that prevent a car from starting, many times they are.

Dead Battery

The most common reason a car won't start is because the battery has died. A dead battery can usually be recharged with the help of a jump start, but batteries do have a lifetime and usually need to be replaced every three to five years. A battery can die due to leaving a door ajar or the lights on.

Failed Starter

The starter motor is fed an electrical charge when the key is turned which causes it to actuate its pinion gear to connect with the flywheel. The motor then turns the flywheel to get the pistons moving up and down. If the motor fails it will usually create a loud repetitive or single clicking noise when the key is turned.

Alternator Trouble

The alternator powers all accessories while the motor is on and it also recharges the battery. If the alternator begins to fail you may notice strange issues with power seats, power windows or even the radio. If this part completely dies you the battery will be drained and you'll be unable to start your car.

Fuel Delivery Issue

Does the engine seem to crank over and over and over without firing up? There is a good chance that this is being caused by a fuel delivery problem. Most likely it is due to a failed fuel pump, but it may also be due to a clogged fuel filter or a faulty fuel injection unit.
