3 Common Problems of the Fuel System

Modern vehicles are extremely complex machines designed to be operated with ease and only require minimal maintenance. However it is important that you conduct that maintenance on time, every time to ensure your car is in proper running order and that it isn't about to leave you stranded. One of the major systems in your car that really doesn't need much attention over the years is the fuel system, however there are a few things that it needs in order to keep passing fuel from the tank to the engine. These are three of the most common fuel system issues and the issues they cause.

Failing Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is a non-serviceable part, meaning if it fails it will need to be replaced. It is generally located inside a vehicle's gas tank and its sole purpose is to pump gasoline from the tank to the engine. A failing pump can cause a variety of problems, the biggest one being your car's engine cranking but not starting. Before it gets to that point though you will likely experience sudden jerking at highway speeds or clunky acceleration.

Dirty Fuel Filter

The fuel system is fitted with a fuel filter designed to remove impurities from the gasoline in order to keep the engine and fuel injectors clean. While it use to be relatively easy to change fuel filters, many new cars have them installed inside the gas tank alongside the pump. This saves money in the short term for both the manufacturer and the vehicle owner, but it is a huge inconvenience when it comes time to replace the filter, which may not be until 100,000 or more. A clogged fuel filter will restrict the flow of gasoline to the engine, causing the car to suddenly lose speed or power or cause a jerking motion when trying to accelerate. Be sure to speak with your mechanic about the appropriate time frame for replacing a fuel filter for your car.

Faulty Fuel Injectors

The fuel injectors are what actually sprays the gasoline into the combustion chamber. If they become dirty, clogged or begin to leak you may experience a wide array of problems. Most commonly you will experience a poor idle and lack of performance. But you may also end up with an engine that knocks or won't even start. Fuel injectors can be cleaned and serviced as needed, so be sure your mechanic takes a look at them if you're having driveability issues.

The fuel system doesn't need a lot from you, but what it does need, periodic filter replacements and injector services, are detrimental to the car's health.
