What Is the Function of the Suspension?

If you enjoy a smooth car ride with good handling and safe braking it is important that you take care of the suspension system in your vehicle. Without healthy suspension vehicles could tip over as the go through corners even at relatively low speeds. So, how can you tell if your car's suspension is in need of repair? The signals that you need suspension service will have to do with rougher performance from the things the suspension assists with: cornering, braking and providing a soft ride.

Ease of Braking

The suspension system is designed to keep all the wheels on the ground while traveling over the roadway, including bumpy terrain and while cornering. Since a car's braking power is distributed over all 4 wheels, if one is off the ground it will decrease your braking ability by 25%. While brake trouble related to the suspension system is not a common issue it is something to be aware of, especially if you have trouble braking while going around a bend.

Smooth Riding

The most known function of the suspension system is to absorb all the bumps and cracks in the road to provide you with a smooth ride. If your vehicle seems a little stiff or if it bounces up and down too much while traveling down the highway it may be time for new leaf springs, shock absorbers or other suspension components.

Cornering

The suspension system shifts the center of gravity of a car, truck or SUV as it corners so that it doesn't roll over. This is done by the shock absorbers and the vehicle's anti-sway bar. The anti-sway bar connects both sides of the vehicle along the axle and each side counteracts the movements of the other to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

Bounce Test

To check the quality of your car's suspension push on the hood or trunk of the vehicle to get it to start bouncing up and down. Once you stop pushing the car should return to its normal ride height within three to four bounces. Any more than that and it is likely that suspension components are worn and tired and due for replacement.

Healthy suspension is necessary for a safe and comfortable ride. If your car seems to bounce around too much while cruising down the road it may be time for to have your suspension serviced.
