How to Prepare Your Car for a Road Trip
Tis the season for fleein'! Spring and summer bring about long, warm days, perfect for covering extra mileage as you cruise across the country to destinations you've longed to see. To ensure that you get to where you're headed safely and efficiently on your summer road trip it is important that you properly prepare your vehicle. Here's a few quick tips that will enhance your journey!
By ensuring that your vehicle's tires are in good condition you can reduce the chances of a blowout. Check for cracked rubber or bubbling sidewall along with the level of tread left. If your tires are in good shape be sure they're properly inflated. Under inflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency by 25 percent or more!
If you have experienced any signs of brake trouble, such as a grinding noise when slowing, a soft brake pedal or a pulling sensation when you hit the brakes, head to the shop. You don't want to cover long distances with brakes that are on the fritz.
Lights & Wipers
For maximum safety you should ensure your wipers can properly clear the windshield, as you never know when you'll get caught in the rain. Additionally be sure all lights work. This includes the headlights, tail lights, brake lights, reverse lights, blinkers and your dashboard lights.
Oil Change & Tune Up
Is your car due for an oil change? Now would be the time to do it! Old oil will reduce efficiency and put extra strain on the motor. To restore fuel economy even further consider a tune up, such as new spark plugs, air filter and fuel filter.
Factory Auto Maintenance
Check your owner's manual to see if your vehicle is due for any form of auto maintenance. Neglecting to complete factory services could result in a break down.
It's important to be prepared for anything. A safety kit should be kept in the trunk of your car that includes first aid items, water, traffic triangles and/or flares, and jumper cables.
Before you hit the road get your car checked out by a professional auto repair mechanic so any an all issues can be taken care of.
