3 Common Signs of Power Steering Failure
Modern vehicles utilize hydraulics in order to operate numerous systems within themselves. This includes the braking system, automatic transmission, suspension components, and the power steering system. The latter being one of the greatest advancements in terms of engineering a way to ease the driving experience, making it a more enjoyable act for everyone who finds themselves behind the wheel. The system utilizes hydraulic force in order to easily turn the wheels from side to side. Power steering makes controlling the vehicle much easier, especially at slower speeds, but it also reduces the amount of play in the steering wheel at higher speeds.
If the power steering system fails you will notice that it is harder to turn the the vehicle and that the steering wheel may feel like it can move from side to side without changing the direction of the vehicle. If you experience any of these signs of power steering trouble be sure to head to the repair shop to have the system serviced.
Whining Noise while Turning
A common sign of trouble in the power steering system is a whining noise that occurs as you try to maneuver your vehicle left or right. This noise is generally caused by a failing power steering pump. However it may also make this noise if there is a leak in the system causing low levels of power steering fluid. Be sure to check the reservoir to see if the correct amount of fluid is currently in the system. If the reservoir is full you can attribute the noise to a faulty pump.
Hard Turning Steering Wheel
Perhaps the most obvious sign of trouble in the power steering system is a steering wheel that is hard to turn. This is often the result of a leak in the system, but it may be caused by mechanical failure. Another potential issue that causes this is trouble within the steering column. It's important to know that a hard to turn steering wheel can also be caused by alignment issues or low tire pressure, so be sure to have a professional mechanic diagnose the root cause of the issue.
Vibrating Steering Wheel
If the power steering system is suffering from a malfunctioning drive belt you will notice that your steering wheel will vibrate. This will happen if the belt is torn or if it has began to slip from its pulley. This will generally only happen at certain points in the steering rotation. You can test the drive belt by parking your vehicle and putting it in neutral, And then turning the steering wheel all the way left and right. If the wheel begins to vibrate at only a certain point you can be sure that the belt is having some sort of issue.
