7 Signs of Suspension Failure
To help ensure smooth handling and safe driving, it's important that your suspension remains in great shape. When you first notice a sign of suspension trouble, you'll want to get to the shop for an inspection so the issue can be identified and addressed. Here's a look at six symptoms of a suspension problem.
Fails the Bounce Test
You can do a simple test to help you figure out if you're driving with worn-out shocks/struts. First, make sure your vehicle is securely parked and at no risk of rolling. Next, press down with all of your muscle on the front and and rock it a couple of times, then let go. Then, head to the back of your vehicle and repeat this step on the rear. Upon releasing, your vehicle should rock no more than two or three times. If it rocks more than this, then you'll want to have a mechanic inspect your suspension.
Assuming you're following the posted speed limit, you shouldn't get a drifting or swaying sensation when you go around sharp turns. But if it does feel this way, then your suspension could be in poor shape.
"Nose Diving" Sensation
If your shocks are shot, it may seem like you're lunging forward at a downward trajectory when you engage the brakes.
One Corner Sits Low
A damaged spring could cause one corner of your car to sit lower. In such a scenario, you could hear clunking sounds when you go over bumps.
Bumpy DrivingIf your car feels like it's badly bouncing around whenever it goes over any little bump in the road, then suspension trouble is likely brewing.
Bald Spots on TiresWorn-out shocks/struts can cause tires to wear down unevenly, which may cause bald spots to develop.
Leaking or Visible Damage
It's a good idea to occasionally conduct a quick visual inspection of your suspension. If your shocks are leaking oil, they'll probably need to be replaced.
