Signs of Alternator Trouble that You Need to Know

Signs of Alternator Trouble that You Need to KnowIt's important to take action as soon as you notice a sign of alternator failure. If you delay getting to the shop, then the issue could soon escalate and leave you stranded. At Brake Masters, our local mechanics can expertly identify and address alternator and electrical system problems. Don't hesitate to give us a call if you notice any of the following signs of an alternator problem.

Common Symptoms of Alternator Failure

A dead battery is one of the better-known signs of alternator failure. Power generated by the alternator is stored in the battery. If the alternator isn't working properly, the battery's power reserve could become depleted to the point that your car won't start. A new car battery should work reliably for at least three years. If your battery is in this age range and has died (and not because you left your lights on), then you may be dealing with a bad alternator.

An illuminated warning light that reads ALT or GEN is another sign of alternator trouble. This light might also come on in the shape of a little battery. Anytime a warning light comes on, it's important to figure out what exactly is triggering it before the problem worsens and costs more to address.

A bad alternator can also cause issues with electrical accessories. Today's cars commonly have computers that can figure out which electrical accessories should first have the power supply diminished when there's a problem with the alternator. This conserves power for the vehicle's most essential electrical functions, but may lead to issues with accessories like power seats or the radio. Alternator trouble can also cause headlights to act erratically. When headlights start to dim or flicker, it can pose a serious safety hazard, particularly if you're driving at night on a road that doesn't have streetlights. An alternator problem can also create a safety hazard if you stall out while in traffic because not enough power is being sent to spark plugs.
