Is it Time for New Shocks or Struts?
The suspension system is tasked with a few very important jobs. While most people understand that it is the suspension which ensures a smooth ride, it actually does so much more to keep you not just comfortable, but safe. The suspension is what keeps all four wheels on the ground, allowing for maximum braking power at any given time and preventing your vehicle from rolling over. If you ever notice any of these signs of suspension trouble be sure to contact your local auto repair shop for service immediately.
One Corner is Low
If one corner of your car appears to be dipping, yet the tire in that corner is not flat, there is a strong chance that the shocks have failed and collapsed on themselves. This can present drifting issues that will cause uneven tire wear as well. Allow a repair shop to replace the suspension in that corner and be sure they inspect the other suspension for signs of possible failure.
Grease on the Shocks
If you have noticed your car's ride being a little more rigid or extra bouncy run a rag across the shocks, which are generally accessible through the wheel wells. Many types of shocks use a specialized fluid to help absorb the unevenness of the roadway but if the shock housing cracks or a seal fails the suspension will be unable to do its job.
You can test your vehicle's suspension by pressing on the hood or trunk of the car to get it to start bouncing up or down. Once you stop pushing the car should return to its normal ride height and a stable position within three or four bounces, any more than that and it is likely the suspension needs service.
Perhaps the scariest sign of suspension trouble is a rolling sensation that you feel while cornering. This often indicates failure of the ant-isway bar, which is what shifts the vehicle's center of gravity while cornering in order to keep all four wheels on the ground.
