5 Signs of Potential Alternator Failure
In order to keep the electrical components of your vehicle working it is equipped with an alternator that produces electricity which is than stored in the battery. If the alternator fails you may experience several issues, the worst being a vehicle that won't start. Your car will likely give you several signs that the alternator is on its way out prior to completely failing though. If you experience any of these symptoms of alternator failure be sure to make an appointment with your local auto repair shop to have the part replaced!
Dashboard Indicator Light
Many vehicles have a dashboard indicator light that reads ALT or GEN which will illuminate if there is a problem with the alternator. Many times this will be the first indication of an issue with the alternator. You can thank your car's warning system for letting our know about this problem before you ended up in a no start situation!
Dim or Flickering Headlights
A struggling alternator will often result in dim or flickering headlights because it is the part that creates the power that illuminates the lights.
While the vehicle is running the alternator supplies power to all sorts of electrical systems in your car, including power windows and seats, the air conditioning, radio and more. If you experience widespread electrical failures there's a strong chance the alternator has failed or is on its way out.
Hard Starts or Stalling
The alternator provides the power to the spark plugs which ignites the air/fuel mix in your engine. If the alternator is failing it may not be able to produce enough power to keep the engine alive, resulting in stalling or starting issues.
Batteries can die for a variety of reasons. But if you're positive it wasn't drained because you left the lights on or because it has reached the end of its life it is likely that the battery is not being recharged by the alternator. If this is the case it means the electrical power is being drained from the battery in order to keep your car's electronics working right.
If you run into any sort of electrical trouble there is a good chance it is related to a problem with the alternator. If you need alternator repair in Camarillo or Oxnard head to Brake Masters.
