Is it time for a new starter motor?
The starter motor is the device that gets the motor spinning after you turn the key or push the start button in your car. If the starter motor fails for one reason or another then you won't be going anywhere. The most common way to determine if the starter is failing is through sound. You may encounter a few different noises should it be time for starter motor repair, including the following.
The most common sign of starter motor failure is a clicking noise that occurs when you turn the key, but the motor not turning over at all. This is the sound of the starter motor actuating its pinion gear but not spinning. This likely means it is time for a new starter motor.
If you encounter a grinding noise when you turn the key, but the motor doesn't try and start, or cranks oddly, it may be that the mounting bolts that hold the starter in place are loose. This will prevent the starter from engaging with the flywheel correctly, and could cause additional damage to these parts.
A whirring noise usually means that the starter is not connecting with the flywheel, but it is spinning. This may indicate a poor connection or a failing unit. Further diagnostics will need to be ran to ensure that the right repair is made.
If your car creates a buzzing sound when you turn the key in the ignition but nothing else happens it may mean that there is a poor electrical connection.
One of the first things that may indicate starting trouble is if your car sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't when you turn the key.
