5 Signs it is Time for Transmission Service

5 Signs it is Time for Transmission ServiceYour car consists of many systems that work together in order to make the wheels turn. While the engine is what generates the power it is the transmission that transfers that power to the wheels via the driveline. The transmission is a very intricate piece of machinery that, like many automotive systems, requires routine maintenance. If it is neglected or simply has many thousands of miles on it there is a good chance it is going to need some type of repair. Before you end up with a transmission that won't shift at all be sure to head to the auto repair shop if you experience any of these signs of transmission trouble.

Delayed Shifting

If your car does not shift right away it generally indicates that there it is low on transmission fluid. Delayed shifting is characterized by a high revving engine either between the time you put the car in drive and it starts moving or in between shifting gears while moving.

Burning Smell when Shifting

If you catch a whiff of something burning as you shift gears in your manual transmission car it is likely time for a new clutch or a clutch adjustment. You may remember this smell from when you were first learning how to drive a stick.

Popping out of Gear

If your vehicle shifts spontaneously (automatic transmission) or if it pops into neutral (manual transmission) you need to visit the auto shop soon. This is a very dangerous problem as it hinders your ability to properly control your vehicle.

Transmission Fluid Leak

If you find a puddle of red fluid collecting under your vehicle you've likely discovered a transmission fluid leak. This will eventually lead to your transmission failing completely if the issue is not addressed. Do not hesitate to call your mechanic to make an appointment for transmission repair.

Grinding Noises when Shifting

One of the most common signs of trouble for a transmission is a grinding noise that occurs during shifting. This could represent a number of problems which include a lack of transmission fluid, synchronization problems or even a chipped gear tooth. Get to the mechanic right away to prevent the problem from growing worse.

What these problems have in common is that they can often be fixed with routine transmission maintenance. Be sure to always have this done at the proper mileage point, but if you run into trouble talk to the team at Brake Masters about getting transmission service in Camarillo or Oxnard.
