What is a Fluid Flush?

Gasoline and engine oil are not the only fluids that vehicle's use in order to operate. The systems throughout the vehicle rely heavily on several types of liquids that are designed specifically to complete a certain function within the car. Over the years these fluids may begin to break down or accumulate excessive amounts of contaminants or moisture, which will prevent them from properly doing their job. If you check your vehicle's owner's manual you will find a service schedule that details which fluids need to flushed, in other words drained from the vehicle and refilled, and when.

Another important thing to know about the fluids used by your vehicle is how to identify them. Knowing this will help you detect potential problems with you car should it begin to leak something. Use this quick guide to automotive fluids to tell your mechanic what you believe is leaking from your car prior to bringing it in for repair.

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid, which is obviously used in the power steering system, provides the hydraulic force necessary to make cornering easy. It is described as having a burnt smell and come come in a variety of colors, but most often it is a dark red color.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is generally a clearish-brown color. It will generally leak from the brake master cylinder or from one of the individual wheel cylinders. A leak will usually be accompanied by a soft or spongy brake pedal.

Automatic Transmission Fluid

If you find a bright reddish fluid dripping from under your vehicle and collecting under the engine area it is most likely automatic transmission fluid. You may experience trouble shifting if this is the case.

Differential Fluid

Fluid used in your vehicle's differential is very similar to ATF. The best way to tell the difference is by taking note of where the fluid collects. If it is at the back of the car it is probably differential fluid.

Engine Coolant/Antifreeze

Coolant, AKA antifreeze, is generally a bright green color and smells very sweet. Head to the mechanic as soon as you notice a leak in order to avoid overheating issues!
