What is Routine Auto Maintenance?

As a vehicle owner it is your duty to ensure that your car gets the services it needs to remain in a safe and reliable operating condition. If you check your vehicle's owner's manual you will find a service schedule that depicts everything your car will need and when, in regard to factory auto maintenance.

It is important to conduct routine maintenance not only because it will keep your car running well, but it will save you hundreds of dollars over the cost of expensive repairs. Maintenance basically comes down to whether or not you would rather spend $100 now or $1,000 later. Here are the most common types of auto maintenance your car will need.

Oil Change

Oil changes are the most frequent service needed by any car. Most autos need them every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but be sure to check your owner's manual to find out how often your vehicle needs them. This service ensures the motor is properly lubricated.

Fluid Flush Services

Your car uses several specialized fluids to operate its various systems. From time to time these fluids need to be drained and refilled to remove contaminants. This is called a fluid flush. Most cars require a cooling system flush, power steering flush, differential flush and brake fluid flush.

Belts & Hoses

Belts and hoses under the hood will wear out over time. Replacing them before they fail is key to preventing major motor damage.

Transmission Service

The transmission also requires a fluid flush of sorts, but it needs other services as well. Transmission service often includes removing the transmission pan, cleaning it and replacing the transmission pan gasket during reinstallation to prevent leaks.

30/60/90K Maintenance

Most other services will fall under 30/60/90K maintenance, given its name because they are services that are necessary every 30,000 miles. This can include replacing the spark plugs and wires, installing a new air filter or fuel filter and completing computer diagnostics.
