When to Get Transmission Fluid Exchanged

By completing transmission maintenance tasks as needed, you can help to prevent expensive transmission problems from developing. To minimize the risk of major transmission trouble, you'll want to always drive with the right level of clean transmission fluid. It's generally recommended that transmission fluid gets exchanged every 30,000 miles, but it's worth consulting your owner's manual to see the mileage intervals at which your car needs this service. In addition to mileage markers, there are other indications that your vehicle would benefit from a transmission fluid exchange. At Brake Masters, our local mechanics can conduct any type of maintenance that your vehicle needs. Come and see us if you notice any of the following signs that your vehicle is due for a transmission fluid exchange.

Does my car need a transmission fluid exchange?

If your car is popping out of gear, then you'll want to bring this issue to a mechanic's attention. It's possible that this is occurring because pollutants in the transmission fluid are obstructing the fluid's flow. Consequently, there might not be sufficient hydraulic pressure to keep your car in gear. A transmission fluid exchange may be able to resolve this problem. Polluted fluid can cause other issues as well, such as lunging/surging and gears shifting too quickly/slowly.

By checking your transmission fluid once per month, you'll be more easily alerted to developing problems. It's generally best to check transmission fluid with the car still running because transmission fluid tends to contract as it cools, which can give an inaccurate reading on how much you're actually driving with. If the fluid looks or smells burnt, then you may benefit from a transmission fluid exchange, though there's also a chance with these symptoms that you'll need more in-depth work to be done. And if your transmission dipstick shows that your fluid level is worryingly low, then a leak could be present. Transmission fluid leaks should always be repaired quickly so that major transmission problems don't get the opportunity to emerge.
