Why is My Car Overheating?
So you were driving down the road and white smoke started spewing from under the hood. Immediately thoughts of expensive repairs likely rushed through your head, but there is a good chance all that you will need is some form of affordable cooling system repair, which can be done quickly under most circumstances. The cooling system keeps the engine cool by pumping coolant through it using a system of hoses, a water pump, a radiator, fan and thermostat. As you rack the miles up on your car the radiator, thermostat or hoses (or all of them) may wear out, causing your car's engine to overheat. If your car has overheated be sure to look for these signs of radiator and cooling system damage to help determine the cause of the trouble. Remember, never touch a radiator when it is hot!
Pinhole in a hose or the radiator
When the car has cooled down, pop the hood and take a look around. If you find spots of discoloration on the engine, radiator or surrounding area it may have been caused by a liquid squirting out of a small hole in the radiator or a hose and landing on hot engine parts. The liquid would boil off and leave spots of discoloration that quickly begin to rust.
Low Coolant Levels
Proper vehicle maintenance includes checking your coolant level on occasion when the car is cool. If you find that you have low coolant level don't drive the vehicle without adding the proper amount and mixture otherwise you run the risk of overheating.
Leaking Coolant Fluid
If you discover a puddle of bright green, yellow or sometimes pink fluid that is slimy to the touch collecting in your driveway you have likely just discovered a coolant leak. Leaks are often attributed to small pinholes in hoses or the radiator itself that can sometimes be repaired with liquid metal or a new hose. However other leaks will require a new radiator.
If your thermostat goes bad then the vehicle will not be able to accurately control the engine temperature, which can cause overheating.
An overheating engine can cause major internal damage and other issues for your car, truck or SUV, so get the problem repaired as soon as it is discovered.
