Why Does My Car Need Oil Changes?
All vehicles require routine maintenance in order to remain on the road and in good condition. Neglecting your vehicle of certain services is a surefire way to end up with expensive repair bills due to blown head gaskets, burnt rings and other various engine problems. One of the most common services that any vehicle will need is the oil change. For most cars this is necessary between every 3,000 and 5,000 miles. Putting off or forgetting to have the oil changed can result in major engine damage due to the fact that parts will grind together with harsh friction, causing them to quickly deteriorate. While this is the main reason to have a oil changed on a regular basis, there are some other important aspects to the oil change. Here are three reasons to never put off oil changes.
Fresh oil helps regulate the engine operating temperature
Fresh oil is able to absorb heat that is produced by the motion of the engine. Along with the vehicle's cooling system this action helps to regulate the operating temperature of the engine, preventing overheating issues. While the cooling system can generally complete this job on its own, oil is able to prevent heat from being produced by reducing the amount of friction that the engine's moving parts must deal with, which in turn would cause excessive heat creation. Oil also circulates through areas of the engine that coolant cannot, thus providing a very valuable service.
Draining the old oil out of the engine helps keep it clean
As oil circulates through the engine it picks up dirt, dust and other contaminants that have made their way inside. As these pieces of debris mix with the engine oil it turns it into a muddy substance often referred to as sludge. This sludge makes it very difficult for the engine to operate, causing a reduction in power and fuel efficiency. During an oil change this dirty oil is removed from the engine and replaced with fresh, clean oil, restoring the full capabilities of the motor.
Oil changes ensure proper lubrication
The most important reason to never skip oil changes is to ensure that your engine is properly lubricated. Without oil the motor's moving parts will rub together, causing them to quickly deteriorate and resulting in the need for very extensive and expensive engine repair. This can be easily avoided by ensuring you always have the oil changed at the correct mileage interval as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.
