Why are Wheel Alignments Necessary?
When a car's wheels are out of alignment it, in the most basic of terms, means that at least one tire is not pointing straight forward when the steering wheel is. This can affect many components of your vehicle, including the steering, suspension and tires. Worst of all, however, is that it can hinder the safety of your ride as a car with poor alignment becomes difficult to control. While it's a relative complex topic this article gives you the information you need to know regarding wheel alignments.
How do tires become misaligned?
In reality it doesn't take much for a vehicle to lose its wheel alignment. There are several different things that can cause a vehicle to have its alignment thrown of. This can include hitting the curb or a cement parking block, going over potholes and general wear and tear. Regarding the latter, the wear and tear is often of rubber parts in the steering system that causes the wheel alignment to be thrown off, such as ball joints and socket joints.
What happens if I don't get an alignment?
If you don't get an alignment you will end up needing tires a lot more often than you should. Poor alignment will result in tires wearing in strange patterns, causing them to lose traction quickly. Other issues you will experience include drifting to one side or the other and your steering wheel will likely begin to shake back and forth with much force.
How often are alignments necessary?
This can vary from car to car, but ideally you would have your alignment checked every 6,000 to 10,000 miles. You may not need an actual alignment that often, but having it checked using high tech equipment will ensure that everything is in line. Catching an alignment issue early is important because the longer you wait to have it corrected the more damage will be done to the tires and other driving components.
